Vista spans the central stairwell of Whitman Elementary School with thousands of colored pencils, cut and set into geometric frames of birch and maple.
Hundreds of students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, told us how they see the landscape around them: the rivers, shrub-steppe, mountains, and hills of the Columbia River Basin. Their stories shaped the colors and forms of the finished work, so children meet their own picture of home each time they climb the stairs.
