This sculpture is designed as a welcoming and iconic beacon on the exterior of the Heartline Building. The segments stand off the wall and appear to mimic or shadow the pattern of the board formed concrete. Representations of cobblestones, concrete, asphalt, and trolley rails are drawn in the glass as nods to the history of the transforming Pearl District.

Commissioned by Security Properties, for Heartline Apartments in Portland, Our Past Was Writ in Water is a welcoming beacon for neighborhood residents, retailers, and visitors. Some segments of this outdoor sculpture resemble board-formed concrete behind it; other segments cast soft shadows. Images of cobblestone, asphalt, and trolley rails are drawn into glass, to connect to site history in the city’s northwest quadrant.
